Have you ever heard of Oued Zem? Probably not. This little Moroccan city has sadly become famous by becoming the worldwide capital of sextorsion (a sexual scam to extort money). The Moroccan city has no less than 3000 sexual blackmailers who racket mainly Western men.

The victims are lured by false Facebook profiles containing photos or videos of porn stars or charming models. Afterwards, these swindlers exchange messages and establish a personal relationship with these men in order to encourage them to participate in a video chat on Skype. During this session, a pre-recorded video of the porn star will be broadcast instead of a live webcam to give their victim the illusion of being in front of a very beautiful woman. These gullible men’s are then encouraged to perform sex acts, which are recorded and used against them later.

These unscrupulous people then demand up to 800 euros to keep them from posting these photos or videos of sexual acts online. These scammers threaten to send the video to the men’s friends and family members on the social media if the ransom is not paid.

The funds are usually transferred through agencies like Western Union before it gets to the criminals.

As of now, nearly 350 people have already been arrested in this city, which represents only 10% of these criminals who are still running rampant with this scam. Morocco has also set up a series of cybercrime units in order to destroy this illegal industry that is detrimental to the country’s image.
